The City Chicks

The life and times of a couple of urban farmgirls!

No eggs yet July 28, 2010

Filed under: Our City Chick's (the feathered ones!) — Flour Girls & City Chicks @ 10:00 am

Do you have any eggs yet?  That’s the question I get asked at least once or twice a week.  No not yet.  Our girls are still too young.  Maybe by fall.  Our girls are growing into their own little personalities though.  With Izzy, our Buff Orpington,  definitely being one of the sweetest.  Just yesterday she started following me around the yard and when I called her to the gate she came flitting over to me.  The Dominiques, Milly and Tilly are tame and like to be held when you go to them.  Then you have the Crazies…  The Ameraucanas, Cleo and Isis, they like to be the leaders of the group and at the same time the loners.  They are not as social towards us as the others but by no means are they mean.  They still allow us to hold them…if we can catch them!   We got the crazies for their beautiful blue and green tinted eggs though.  We still have three baby chicks in our house though.  We are in the process of getting the older ones used to their presence in the yard so they don’t get picked on to terribly.  Although, I think a little is to be expected.

If you are ever in the neighborhood stop by and visit and us.  You better plan to stay a bit though.  The girls will lull you into a calm submission with their little crackles and chirpy sounds.

Hugs~ Christina

Oh so sweet…

Sweet Corn that is.  Yes, I did have the best intentions this weekend of blogging and sewing but instead I spent some time in the kitchen and at Sur La Table.   I LOVE Sur La Table! So much so that I went twice.  They have everything and more when it comes to handy kitchen gadgets to make my life easier.

Friday Todd and Donovan did all the hard work of picking this load of corn.  Which left me to either get it prepared for canning or for freezing.  I don’t have a pressure cooker to can the corn so I froze it.  I always find that putting up food is a bit time-consuming.  However, it is really worth it and I hope that in time I will learn to do it faster.  Twenty  jars later though I realized how much faster it went this time.  Thanks to the OXO Good Grips corn peeler.

Which brings me to a summer give-away here at the urban homestead!  Since it is already or soon to be time for the sweet corn harvest around the U.S. I thought I would give you all a chance to win a few of my favorite sweet corn related items.  It will include that nifty corn peeler I now love so much, a Butter-boy for gliding butter over that hot cob of corn, a set of Zyliss interlocking corn holders so you can easily find a pair and a set of Ball freezer jars.  These freezers jars are great…they are BPA free and they stack, lock together and store great.  As always you will find an additional surprise that is not listed.  So how do you get this little corn starter package.  It is easy!  Either you can leave a comment and tell me your favorite corn recipe  & no you don’t have to list the recipe directions, unless you want to or you can subscribe to the blog.  The winner will be chosen on August 10th.

I know, I haven’t forgotten you… July 22, 2010

I know, I know.  I haven’t posted in such a long time.  I really don’t need the reminders girls.  ((wink wink))  Although, I do apologize to all of you faithful readers. You know how busy life can get from time to time.   So this weekend I have cleared my schedule to do a bit of blogging for you all.  I have tried several new recipes.  So I will share a few of those with you and then I am going to take some time to work on some U.F.O’s (Un~Finished~Objects).  In my case sewing objects.  First on my list will be to finish the apron I was going to send my Mom for mother’s day.  Better late than never I figure.

So be sure to come back later.  I promise I will be posting again soon!  Maybe I will even have a give away.  Hum, what ever shall it be though.

Dammit Doll Exchange May 24, 2010

Filed under: City Chicks & Farmgirl Friends,In the Craft Room — Flour Girls & City Chicks @ 8:24 am

This week I somewhat blindly signed up for a Dammit Doll Exchange/Swap with some of the girls over at MaryJane’s Farm.  I say blindly because I wasn’t quite sure exactly what a Dammit Doll was.  Sure they gave a brief description of one and how easy the pattern would be to make etc.  Either way I like the idea of one and I loved the saying that will be sent with him.  So I designed my own pattern and I liked it so much I think I will be making up a few more to sell in my etsy store.

On a little side note…when I sent my hubby a picture of it once I was done he asked, “well who is supposed to look like?”  Really I didn’t model it after him.  It just turned out that once it was complete it took on his image.  He’s pretty cute huh?

There here… May 20, 2010

Yes, they have arrived.  What you may be wondering?  Well if you have been reading the ramblings of the City Chicks for a while you probably already know…The Chicks are here! The Chicks are here!  The post office called us at 6:40 a.m. yesterday to let us know that are chicks were ready to get picked up.  Who knew the USPS would call anybody that early.  They proceeded to call us two more times even though they didn’t open until 8:30.  Apparently they must have been nervous or scared of the peeping box.  The chicks all arrived safe and soundly. *Even though the hatchery put the wrong address on the box.  Luckily Omaha is not that big of a city!

Jade has already started naming them in pairs.  Izzy & Bella for the Buff Orpington’s, Tilly & Milly for the Dominique’s, and no names for the two Ameraucana’s yet.

Well I’m off to get the house ready for Farmgirl Friday.  Have a great day!

What a great start to the week…

Filed under: Oh the treasures we find — Flour Girls & City Chicks @ 3:59 pm

Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous day outside so I decided that Jade and I should take a drive down to see our favorite little shop owner Connie.  Her store Prairie Piecegoods always has something new and exciting every time we go in.  Sunday was no exception.  While going through a box she had yet to unpack I came across a fabulous tan vintage hand-tooled leather purse.  It truly was love at first sight.  I had already acquired a darling little black one for my vintage purse collection a few months back.  Of course, it seems that nothing I ever want to purchase is tagged at Connie’s store; so I was holding my breath waiting  for a hefty price when I bravely asked how much she would want for it.  Brace yourself… I got the little beauty for a mere $10!

Now if I can just get her hubby, Doug,  to part with the box of old slides that has been sitting there for months collecting dust.  He says that he is waiting for his siblings to go through them first since they belonged to their parents and grandparents.  Maybe I’ll wear him out one of these days.  I am hopeful those Kodachrome slides will be all mine!

Didn’t anybody… May 13, 2010

Filed under: The Urban Homestead,Through the Garden Gate — Flour Girls & City Chicks @ 7:15 pm

Didn’t anybody tell Mother Nature that it was Springtime?  Here at the U.H. we are all starting to get a wee bit restless.  It seems as though the sun has not let her precious light shine in at least a week.  Yes, it has given me a reason to clean up the sewing room.  However, it feels too clean now and I can’t decide what to make next!

But then today, about an hour ago, the light peeked through the clouds.  So I simply couldn’t resist grabbing the camera and going for a little stroll through the homestead.  Lord, has that rain been doing wonders for the new strawberry patch…not to mention the weeds loved getting there feet wet too.  As much as I have disliked the weather it appears that Mother Nature was just doing her job.   Things are blooming and growing like crazy.

May Showers have brought Strawberry Flowers!

This is the bush that is technically the neighbors but it is right along our driveway.

Well I’ve gotta go get back outside now.  Those weeds are going take over if I don’t go and start getting at them now.
